Brazilian authorities report that the “loneliest man in the world,” a member of an Amazon tribe who lived alone for about 26 years, has passed away.
The mysterious man was the last survivor of a Brazilian indigenous group that had not been in contact with outsiders, according to The Guardian. He was referred to as the “Man of the Hole” because he spent a significant portion of his life hiding or finding shelter in earthen pits.

The man’s body was discovered on August 23 in a hammock outside of his straw house, according to Brazil’s Indigenous Affairs Agency (Funai), which kept tabs on the man’s health from afar. The authorities claimed there were no indications of violence. The fact that he had decorated his body with vibrantly colored feathers, they said, suggests that the man was preparing to pass away.
