Jack Roosevelt Robinson was an American professional baseball player who made history by becoming the first African American to play in Major League Baseball (MLB) during the modern era. He was born on January 31, 1919, and passed away on October 24, 1972. Robinson was the first player of any race to start for a major league baseball team when he did so for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947.

The signing of Jackie Robinson by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1947 marked the beginning of the end of racial segregation in professional baseball, which, since the 1880s, had consigned black players to the Negro leagues. In 1962, Robinson was honoured by being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Robinson was the first black player to be honoured with the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 1949, which he won during his 10-year career in Major League Baseball (MLB). Robinson also won the Rookie of the Year Award in 1947, which was the first year the award was given out and was an All-Star for six consecutive seasons from 1949 through 1954.

Robinson was a member of the Dodgers team that won the World Series in 1955 and participated in a total of six World Series throughout his career.
