Issei Sagawa was born to well-off parents on April 26, 1949, in Kobe, Hygo Prefecture. Sagawa’s grandfather had worked as an editor for The Asahi Shimbun, and his father, Akira Sagawa, was a businessman who had presided over Kurita Water Industries.
Sagawa was diagnosed with enteritis, a disorder of the small intestine, shortly after being born prematurely and apparently small enough to fit in the palm of his father. After numerous potassium and calcium in saline injections, Sagawa eventually made a full recovery.
Due to his precarious health and reclusive nature, Sagawa became very interested in literature. Sagawa went to school in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, where in the first grade, after witnessing a male’s thigh, he first had cannibalistic urges.
Sagawa claimed in a 2011 interview with Vice that as a young man, he engaged in bestiality with his dog and had cannibalistic fantasies about women.
Wako University was Sagawa’s undergraduate institution, while Kwansei Gakuin University was where he earned his master’s in English literature.
When Sagawa was 24 years old and a student at Tokyo’s Wako University, he followed a tall German woman home and broke into her apartment while she was sleeping.
She woke up and, according to Sagawa, pushed him to the ground, thwarting his plan to cannibalize her by chopping off a portion of her buttocks and sneaking away with a small portion of her flesh.
Sagawa did not reveal his genuine intentions to the authorities before being apprehended by police and charged with attempted rape. When Sagawa’s father made a settlement with the victim, the attempted rape accusations against him were dismissed.
Sagawa relocated to France in 1977 when he was 27 years old to seek a Ph.D. in literature at the Sorbonne in Paris.
