One of the four Minneapolis Police Department officers who were responsible for George Floyd’s fatal arrest is J. Alexander Kueng. Derek Michael Chauvin, Tou Thao, and Thomas Lane were the others.
Kueng briefly stocked shelves at a Target before becoming a police officer. He intended to play soccer and study business at Monroe College in New Rochelle, New York, but he dropped out after having surgery on both knees.
An employee at Cup Foods on Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, reported a customer who was attempting to pay with a counterfeit $20 bill to the Minneapolis Police Department on May 25, 2020. Floyd was taken into custody by Chauvin, Thao, Lane, and Kueng because he appeared to match the suspect’s descriptions.
During Floyd’s arrest, Kueng and Lane arrived first, followed by Chauvin and Thao in a separate squad car a few minutes later. Floyd was being held back by Kueng while Chauvin was kneeling on Floyd’s neck.
The fatal encounter, which was broadcast live on Facebook, was witnessed by a number of bystanders. The video shows Floyd lying face down on the street next to the rear passenger wheel of the squad car and repeatedly telling the police he couldn’t breathe.
Floyd was held in place by Chauvin for a total of nine minutes and 29 seconds by his left knee. This lasted for two minutes and 53 seconds after the arrestee stopped responding.
Kueng and Lane were holding Floyd while Chauvin was kneeling on his neck. In contrast, Thao was interacting with the witnesses.
Kueng told his coworkers, “I couldn’t find one,” after checking Floyd’s pulse as the arrestee began to lose consciousness. The arrestee was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, where paramedics declared him dead.
