The name Jah Zulu’s name is a combination of the Zulu king Shaka and the Rastafarian word for God.
Jah Shaka was raised in Clarendon Parish, Jamaica, which has given birth to a number of notable roots reggae musicians, including Freddie McGregor, Everton Blender, Barrington Levy, and Toots Hibbert. Before he built up his own sound system, Jah Shaka worked as an operator on the Freddie Cloudburst Sound System.
Shaka’s system swiftly attracted a sizable and devoted following by the late 1970s due to the mix of its spiritual meaning, intense rhythms, huge sonority, and his vivacious individual style.
