Caan was born on March 26, 1940, in the Bronx, a borough of New York City, the son of Jewish immigrants from Germany named Sophie (1915-2016) and Arthur Caan (1909-1986). His father was a meat wholesaler and butcher. Caan was born and reared in Sunnyside, Queens, and was one of three kids.
James Caan attended school in New York City before continuing his study at Michigan State University. He played football and belonged to the fraternity Alpha Epsilon Pi during his two years at Michigan State.
He later transferred to Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, but never finished his studies there. Francis Ford Coppola and Lainie Kazan were among his classmates at Hofstra.
James Caan was established as a well-known movie star. He co-starred with Marsha Mason in the road movie Slither (1973), which was based on a screenplay by W. D. Richter, as well as the romantic comedy Cinderella Liberty (1973), both of which were directed by Mark Rydell.
In Karel Reisz’s 1974 film The Gambler, which was based on a screenplay by James Toback that was originally meant for Robert De Niro, he received positive reviews for his portrayal of the movie’s title character.
