On March 26, 1940, James Edmund Caan was conceived. He was an American actor who was nominated for four Golden Globes, an Emmy, and an Oscar, among other honors.

In 1978, Caan received a movie star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The son of Jewish immigrants from Germany, Sophie (nee Falkenstein; 1915–2016) and Arthur Caan (1909–1986), Caan was born on March 26, 1940, in The Bronx, a borough of New York City. His father was a butcher and meat broker. Caan, one of three children, was raised in Sunnyside, Queens. He received his education in New York City before going on to Michigan State University.

During his two years at Michigan State, he was a member of the fraternity Alpha Epsilon Pi.

Before making his Broadway debut in Blood, Sweat, and Stanley Poole, Caan made his off-Broadway debut in plays like La Ronde. He appeared in Coppola’s The Rain People in 1969.
