James Joseph Florio (August 29, 1937 – September 25, 2022) was an American politician of the Democratic Party who served as the 49th governor of New Jersey from 1990 to 1994. He was the first person of Italian ancestry to hold the office. He served in the United States House of Representatives for 15 years, from 1975 to 1990.

Vincenzo [after Vincent Joseph] Florio and Lillian Ellen (née Hazell) Florio were married in 1936 and had three sons, all of whom were given the name Florio. Lillian Ellen (née Hazell) Florio passed away on May 2, 2000. James and his brothers were raised in Brooklyn, New York. His father was Italian, while his mother was of Scottish, Irish, and German ancestry. He attended Brooklyn’s Erasmus Hall High School.

James Florio received a J.D. from the Rutgers School of Law-Camden after attending Trenton State College, which is now known as The College of New Jersey (1967). After graduating from law school, James Florio volunteered to work for the Democratic Party, and Angelo Errichetti, a former mayor of Camden, served as his mentor.
