His parents were Tom Arthur Lovelock and Nellie Annie Elizabeth March.

He was an independent scientist, environmentalist and futurist. Lovelock became famous for proposing the Gaia hypothesis which supposes that the Earth functions as a self-regulating system.

James Lovelock was married to Helen Hyslop in 1942 until she died of multiple sclerosis in 1989.

He later got married to Sandy Orchard in 1991. He had four children in his first marriage named John, Christine, Jane and Andrew.

He was an officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

James Lovelock passed away on 26 July 2022, which was his birthday at his home in Abbotsbury, Dorset, England. He was aged 103 at the time of his death.

Six months before his death, he had a severe fall which deteriorated his health. He finally died as a result of complications from the fall.
