Yasmin “Jessie” Duarte was born on September 19, 1953, in Yasmeen Dangor. She was a South African politician who also served as the African National Congress’ acting secretary general.
She was a longtime opponent of apartheid who held a variety of positions, including special assistant to Nelson Mandela, member of the Gauteng provincial cabinet (MEC), ambassador to Mozambique, and ANC spokesperson, before taking over as deputy secretary-general of the ANC in 2012 and serving in that capacity until her death on July 17, 2022.
Duarte graduated from Johannesburg’s Coronationville Secondary School. Duarte began working in the field of accounting as a management accountant.
She was chosen in 1979 by Albertina Sisulu to establish women’s organizations in South Africa.
She worked as the Federation of Transvaal Women’s secretary two years later, in 1981. (FEDTRAW).
Jessie was held without being tried in 1988. She was given restrictions to follow until the emergency was lifted. At that time, she was establishing a scholarship fund alongside Reverend Beyers Naudé in order to train anti-apartheid activists to serve the public well.
