Mr. Fitzpatrick, who owned the newspaper since the early 1980s, has received tributes. His life ended this morning, according to the newspaper.

Along with the News Letter and Belfast Telegraph, The Irish News, whose chairman was Mr. Fizpatrick, is one of Northern Ireland’s three daily publications.

Micheál Martin, the Taoiseach, said: “I had the tremendous opportunity of getting to know Jim over a long period of time and interacting with him. He was a true gentleman in every way.

“He was a tremendously important campaigner for putting an end to bloodshed in the north during his decades-long stewardship of the Irish News,” Mr. Martin continued. Though little known, his contribution was vital in the early stages of the fledgling peace process.

Eight children—Anne, Brid, Bernard, Eileen, Dominic, Clare, Jim [the BBC presenter], and Andrew—were born to Mr. Fitzpatrick and the late Alice Fitzpatrick.

Dominic Fitzpatrick, managing director of the Irish News, is another one of those kids.
