John Francis Clauser is an American theoretical and experimental physicist who was born on December 1, 1942.

John is most well-known for his contributions to the theoretical underpinnings of quantum mechanics, namely the Clauser–Horne–Shimony–Holt inequality.

Together with Alain Aspect and Anton Zeilinger, he was awarded one-third of the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics “for experiments with entangled photons, showing the violation of Bell inequalities, and pioneering quantum information science.”

From 1969 to 1996, he mostly worked at the University of California, Berkeley, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

In 1972, he and Stuart Freedman did the first experiment to test what the CHSH-Bell theorem said would happen.

This was the first time that a Bell inequality was broken in an experiment. Clauser, Alain Aspect, and Anton Zeilinger all got the Wolf Prize in Physics in 2022. In 2022, all three of them shared the Nobel Prize in Physics.
