Gotti was born on October 27, 1940, in New York City’s Bronx area. He was the sixth of 13 children born to John Joseph Gotti Sr. and Philomena “Fannie” DeCarlo (two died before birth).

When Gotti was still in his teens, he began doing errands for Carmine Fatico, a capo in the Gambino family, which was then known as the Anastasia family and was commanded by boss Albert Anastasia.

Gravano estimates in his book Underboss that Gotti made at least $5 million per year as the company’s boss, and more likely between $10 and $12 million.

Gotti’s underboss, Salvatore “Sammy the Bull” Gravano, assisted the FBI in convicting Gotti by turning state’s evidence and testified against him in 1991 after overhearing the boss make derogatory remarks about him on a wiretap that linked them to a series of killings.
