John Charles Kerin, AO, FTSE, who was born in Bowral, New South Wales, Australia, on 21 November 1937, was an Australian Labor Party politician, and also an economist. He served in a number of top ministerial positions, including eight years as Minister for Primary Industries and Energy, which was the longest tenure in Australian history.
Kerin joined the Labor Party as a student, and in the 1972 election, he won the Macarthur seat for the House of Representatives. Throughout the Whitlam administration, he remained on the backbenches.
However, he lost his seat when Labor was defeated in the 1975 election, so he went back to his job at the ABARE. Kerin was chosen as Labor’s candidate for the safe Werriwa seat, in 1978 by-election prompted by the retirement of former prime minister Gough Whitlam, who had held the seat since 1952.
