The agriculture minister under the Hawke and Keating administrations was John Kerin, a former cabinet member. On November 21, 1937, he was born, and on March 29, 2023, he passed away. He was 85 years old.

Kerin was a key player in the modification of Australia’s agricultural policies under prime minister Bob Hawke after being first elected to the federal parliament in 1972. In addition to managing the portfolio for primary industries in 1991, Kerin also temporarily held the position of treasurer.

After joining the Labor Party as a student, Kerin won the Macarthur seat in the House of Representatives in the 1972 election. He remained with the opposition for the whole Whitlam government. However, he lost his seat after Labor was decisively beaten in the 1975 election and went back to his job at the ABARE.

Kerin studied at Bowral High School as well as Hurlstone Agricultural High School. From the University of New England in Armidale, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1967. From the Australian National University, he earned a Master of Economics in 1977.
