Johnny Famechon was born in Paris on 28th March 1945 was a featherweight professional boxer with about 56 career wins. He moved to Australia when he was five years old, went on to have a remarkable professional career and won a world championship in 1969.
After defeating the Cuban José Legrá in the Albert Hall in London on points, he was both the Lineal and WBC featherweight champion.
In a contentious points decision, he successfully defended his title against Fighting Harada of Japan. Six months later, in their rematch in Japan, Famechon won by knocking Harada out in the 14th round, which is considered to be his most illustrious victory.
He was inducted into the Australian national boxing hall of fame in 2003 for his immense contribution to the sports locally and internationally.
He passed away on August 3, 2022 at the age of 77.
