Brownhill, a former Manchester United schoolboy, joined Preston North End’s junior system at the start of the 2012-13 season, making his first team debut as a substitute in the Football League Trophy on October 8, 2013.
Brownhill scored the game-winning goal in his debut League One start against Gillingham on October 19, 2013, and manager Simon Grayson praised his whole performance.
He added two more goals in 2013 against Crawley Town and Carlisle United, the second of which won the Preston North End Goal of the Year Award after a 13-pass sequence in which every outfield player touched the ball at least once.
