Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri was accused by a law professor of participating in a line of transphobic inquiry during a hearing on the legal implications of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade on Tuesday.
Some progressives have started using the term “pregnant people” — as opposed to “women” — to refer to those whose right to abortion they seek to protect, in order to acknowledge that transgender men and non-binary people are also impacted by the Supreme Court’s decision, which reversed the 1973 landmark decision that had made access to abortion a federal constitutional right.
“You mention “those with the potential to get pregnant.” Would those be women? Khiara Bridges, a professor of law at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, was questioned by Hawley during the contentious discussion at the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.
Bridges said, “Many women, especially cis women, have the ability to become pregnant, but many cis women do not.
Additionally, both non-binary people and trans men can conceive children.
