Joško Gvardiol is a Croatian professional footballer, who currently plays as a defender for Manchester City in the Premier League and represents the Croatia national team. Although his primary position is centre-back, he has also showcased his skills as a left-back. Gvardiolis highly regarded for his physicality, exceptional positioning, and impressive marking abilities.

His football journey began at the age of seven when his father, Tihomir, who was once an amateur player in Novigrad, introduced him to Trešnjevka. During his time there, Lokomotiva and Zagreb noticed his talent; however, at the last moment, Dinamo Zagreb presented an offer that his family couldn’t refuse.

On 18 October, Gvardiol made his league debut for Dinamo, replacing Mario Gavranović in the 87th minute during a 4-2 victory over Gorica. Just a few weeks later, on 2 November, he scored the winning goal in a 1-0 triumph against Inter Zaprešić, marking him as the sixth youngest league goalscorer for Dinamo.

Gvardiol’s Bundesliga debut took place on 20 August 2021, where he played the full match in Leipzig’s 4-0 victory over VfB Stuttgart. He quickly established himself as a key player in Leipzig’s starting lineup and garnered attention for his impressive performances.

Manchester City officially announced the acquisition of Gvardiol on a five-year contract on 5 August 2023, making him the third Croatian player to join the club’s first team, following in the footsteps of Vedran Ćorluka and Mateo Kovačić.

Gvardiol made his debut in the Premier League for Manchester City on 11 August, coming on as a substitute for Rico Lewis in the 79th minute during a 3-0 victory over Burnley. He then received his first start for Manchester City in the 2023 UEFA Super Cup against Sevilla, playing the entire 90 minutes. His team emerged victorious after a 1-1 draw in regulation time, winning 5-4 on penalties. Just three days later, Gvardiol started his first Premier League game, contributing to a 1-0 home win against Newcastle United.

On 6 September, Gvardiol’s exceptional performances led to his nomination for the prestigious 2023 Ballon d’Or award. This recognition further solidified his growing reputation in the football world. Additionally, Gvardiol received his first call-up to the Croatia national under-21 team in October 2019, when he was just 17 years old. Coach Igor Bišćan included him in the squad for the Under-21 Euro 2021 qualifiers against Lithuania and the Czech Republic.

Unfortunately, Gvardiol’s journey faced a setback when he suffered an abdominal wall injury. Despite being initially named in Dalić’s 23-man squad for the 2023 UEFA Nations League Finals on 5 June 2023, he was forced to withdraw on 10 June due to this injury. Dion DrenaBeljo was chosen as his replacement.
