Cage originally gained popularity for his love roles in Valley Girl (1983), Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), and Moonstruck (1987), before winning praise for his depiction as an ex-convict in the black comedy Raising Arizona (1987).

He won the Best Actor Academy Award in 1995 for his portrayal of an alcoholic in the movie Leaving Las Vegas. He received a second Academy Award nomination for his performance as Charlie and John, the twins, in Adaptation (2002).

The 1981 television pilot The Best of Times, which ABC decided not to pick up, was Cage’s acting debut.
