Judy Coughlin, the wife of two-time Super Bowl champion Tom Coughlin, died Tuesday morning at the age of 77.

“My loving wife and our adored mother and grandmother, Judy Whitaker Coughlin, died away this morning at the age of 77,” Tom said in a statement to PEOPLE.

“Judy was an extraordinary woman in every sense. She lived a loving life, giving her heart and soul to others without expecting anything in return. From the first hug to the last, Judy made you feel like an old friend. She was a mother figure to everyone on and off the field. The immensity of Judy’s departure cannot be expressed in words by anybody who knew and loved her, but the great generosity she exhibited to others will go on. Our hearts are torn, but we know she is no longer in pain and is at peace with our Lord.”
