In 2002, as Powell approached her 30th birthday and described herself as “a secretary who lives with her husband, three cats, and a python above a diner on a barren street in Long Island City,” she set out on a year-long mission to recreate all 524 of the dishes from her mother’s copy of Julia Child’s 1961 classic Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Volume 1.
