Matthew Kenneth Rhule (born January 31, 1975) is an American football coach and former player who most recently served as the head coach of the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League (NFL) from 2020 to 2022. Rhule previously served as the head coach at Baylor University and Temple University.
Rhule was named head football coach at Baylor University on December 6, 2016, succeeding interim head coach Jim Grobe. The Bears finished the 2017 season with a 1-11 record, which meant they would miss out on a bowl game for the first time since 2009. Baylor finished the regular season 6-6 and was invited to the 2018 Texas Bowl, where he led the Bears to a 45-38 win over the Vanderbilt Commodores[8] to finish the season 7-6. Under Rhule’s leadership, the Baylor Bears finished the regular season 11-1 before falling to Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship game and Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. Rhule’s teams never defeated a ranked opponent while at Baylor.
