From the time he was nine years old until his expulsion from the African National Congress at the age of 31 in April 2012, he was a party member (ANC). He rose to fame by endorsing the ANC presidential candidate.
Malema was found guilty of using hateful words in both March 2010 and September 2011. In November 2011, he was expelled from the ANC for five years for sowing division in the group.
He was convicted of hate speech again in 2011 after singing “Dubul’ ibhunu” (Shoot the Boer), which was upheld on appeal, and he was expelled from the ANC.
