At Bowie High School in Arlington, Texas, Kamaru Usman began wrestling in his second year of high school. Since he had trouble pronouncing his first name, Kamarudeen, his wrestling coach gave him the nickname “Marty” when he first joined the team. Throughout his time as an amateur wrestler, he continued to go by this name.
While competing in college wrestling for William Penn University in Iowa for one year in 2007, Kamaru Usman earned a spot in the NAIA national tournament but was unable to attend due to snowfall. He left William Penn because he was furious that his head coach and half of his team had left early for the tournament without him.
He had previously been recruited by wrestler Tervel Dlagnev, and after transferring to the University of Nebraska at Kearney, he helped the Lopers win their first team title in 2008.
