Pence was born on January 1, 1957, as Karen Sue Batten at McConnell Air Force Base in Kansas. Her parents were United Airlines employees John M. Batten (1931/1932-1988) and Lillian (Hacker; 1931-2004).
When she was a small child, her parents got divorced, and in 1967, her mother wed Bernard Barcio. She was raised in Indianapolis’ Broad Ripple Village, where she attended Bishop Chatard High School and graduated as valedictorian.
Pence pursued a teaching degree and an art minor at the adjacent Butler University.
She graduated from Butler University with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and a Master of Science (M.S.) in elementary education.
Pence has worked as a teacher in Indianapolis at John Strange Elementary, Acton Elementary, Fall Creek Elementary, and the Orchard School.
After having her first kid, Pence enrolled in a watercolor painting course. A profession painting portraits of homes and historical structures resulted from this.
She has produced as many as 35 paintings every year, some for commission and others for sale at neighbourhood art shows.
