Benzema was born on December 19, 1987, in Lyon, France, and began his professional career in 2005 with Olympique Lyonnais, the team with which he grew up, winning three Ligue 1 titles.
He was selected Player of the Year and a member of the Team of the Year by the National Union of Professional Footballers (UNFP) in 2008, after finishing as the league’s top goalscorer. He won his fourth trophy, as well as the Coupe de France for the first time.
After joining Real Madrid for €35 million in 2009, Benzema became the subject of a then-French record transfer in association football.
