During his time at the club, he was given the nickname Coco by his peers, and after scoring two goals in an under-10 match against the Lyon youth academy, he began to attract the attention of the city’s most powerful club.
Lyon authorities had personally visited Serge Santa Cruz, the president of Bron Terraillon in the 1990s, in a bid to sign the youngster, but Santa Cruz declined.
The club decided to allow Benzema try out for Lyon after chatting with his father. Benzema signed a deal with Lyon after the tryout and was welcomed into the club’s development system.
