Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer was born on August 8th, 1910 in Germany. Puening was the maiden name of her mother. She had a background in biology and botany and was a member of the Communist Party of the United States of America.

 

She was previously wed to the activist Joe Dallet, and after their divorce she wed J. Robert Oppenheimer, a scientist who oversaw the work done at the Los Alamos Laboratory on the Manhattan Project during World War II.

 

Puening studied at the University of Pittsburgh before being hitched to Frank Ramseyer in 1932. She requested and was granted an annulment of their prior marriage after learning that her former husband was both homosexual and a drug addict.

When her father, a metallurgical engineer, was employed by a steel company in Pittsburgh to work on a new type of blast furnace, the family relocated to the Pennsylvania suburb of Aspinwall. Her grandfather had previously lived in the area. The 27th of October in 1972 was the day Katherine passed away. The reason for her passing away was not disclosed.
