Kay Mellor, an English actress, screenwriter, and director, was born on May 11, 1951. She began her career as a writer for Granada Television in the 1980s, writing for the serial opera Coronation Street.

Kay Mellor began writing episodes for the renowned Channel 4 soap Brookside in 1989.

Kay Mellor co-created the long-running children’s drama Children’s Ward with her Coronation Street colleague Paul Abbott in 1988, after writing the anthology drama series Dramarama. In 1997, the series won the BAFTA Award for Best Children’s Drama.

Kay Mellor also wrote and starred in three seasons of the family sitcom Just Us, which aired from 1990 to 1993. (1990-1994). Kay Mellor has since written for television drama serials such as BBC One’s Band of Gold (1995), Playing the Field (1998), Fat Friends (2000), Between the Sheets (2003), and ITV’s Strictly Confidential (2006).

Kay Mellor adapted Fat Friends, a 2000 play, into a theatrical musical in 2017, with music by Nick Lloyd Webber. In 2018, the musical Fat Friends went on tour in the United Kingdom.
