Johnson was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers in the seventh round of the 2001 NFL Draft. While he was healthy, he contributed to the 49ers’ passing game. He was, however, out of commission for the entirety of 2003 and 2005 due to a wound. He caught 82 catches for 825 yards and two touchdowns in 2004, making him the top receiver for the 49ers. Johnson and tight end Vernon Davis, the team’s first-round pick in the draft, split playing time in 2006.
The New Orleans Saints and Johnson agreed to a one-year contract in 2007. On March 14, 2008, the team renewed its contract with him. The Saints released him on July 31, 2008.
