Anthony spent one season at Syracuse University, where he averaged 22.2 points (16th in the NCAA, fourth in the Big East) and 10.0 rebounds (19th in the NCAA, third in the Big East, first among NCAA Division I freshmen). In 2003, Kiyan Carmelo Anthony helped lead the Orangemen to their first NCAA tournament championship. Anthony led the team in scoring, rebounding, minutes played (36.4 per game), field goals made, and free throws attempted and made.
Anthony’s 33-point performance in the Final Four against the University of Texas set a freshman’s NCAA tournament record for most points. Anthony had 20 points and 10 rebounds in the championship game against the University of Kansas. Anthony was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player for his efforts during the NCAA tournament. Following the game, Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim described Anthony as “By far the best college basketball player. It didn’t even come close. Nobody came close to him in college basketball last year. That’s the bottom line”.
