Miss Dora Adjonoh, a 28-year-old student at the University of Education Winneba (UEW), exemplifies the adage “a man’s fall does not mean the end of his life.”
After completing her second cycle of education, she graduated from Ada Senior High School in the Greater Region with a C6 in mathematics. She vowed to never again allow her phobia to prevent her from pursuing her ambition of becoming a mathematics teacher.
She decides to work diligently and enroll in a mathematics course at the University of Education in Winneba in order to achieve her goal.
Her ideal of supporting children in overcoming their fear of mathematics and becoming the best nearly died owing to financial constraints, despite her excellent intentions.
But thanks to PropelEd International, which teamed with Joshob Construction Limited and others to develop the “Build for Tomorrow Scholarship,” where she applied and was selected for the final round, she was able to get the scholarship.
Miss Dora Adjonoh presented the impacts and contributions she hopes to make to mathematics education in Ghana during an event held at the UPSA Vice Chancellor’s Hall in Madina. The judges placed her second, and as a result, she won a staggering sum of GHC10,000 plus other products from sponsors.
She said this on the sidelines of the competition as she wept with delight following her victory. “I received a C6 in Mathematics on the WASSCE, but I resolved to never let it hold me back. I was also driven by the fact that the majority of female students dislike learning mathematics due to way teachers teach it.
She says, “I will ensure that at least 90 percent of the female students excel in mathematics.” Additionally, they should be determined to study.”
Mr Paul Mensah, the overall winner, and Miss Adjonoh each received GHS10,000 to pursue their respective goals at the second edition of PropelEd International’s SOAR program, with assistance from Joshob Construction Limited and the Honorable Diana Asonaba Dapaah, Deputy Attorney General and Deputy Minister of Justice.
They were tasked with making a beneficial contribution to society and establishing a positive reputation for the newly established scholarship program.
