Soon after Rhaenys learned she was pregnant, her father, Prince Aemon Targaryen, who was also King Jaehaerys I’s eldest son and heir, passed away.

Rhaenys was Aemon’s heir, but Jaehaerys I preferred his second son, Prince Baelon, to Rhaenys and her potential child as his new heir.

The succession of the unborn Laena, referred to as “the boy in the belly,” was fiercely contested prior to her birth.

Laena’s claim to the Iron Throne was once more raised during the Great Council in 101 AC, but she and her mother were both rejected because of their sex. By claiming Vhagar, the biggest Targaryen dragon still alive, in 105 AC, Laena had attained the status of dragonrider.
