Laena was born in the year 92 AC. She was King Jaehaerys I Targaryen’s great-granddaughter and the daughter of Lord Corlys Velaryon and Princess Rhaenys Targaryen. Prince Aemon Targaryen, Princess Rhaenys’ father and King Jaehaerys I’s oldest son and heir, died shortly after Rhaenys discovered she was pregnant.
Rhaenys was Aemon’s heir, but Jaehaerys I preferred his second son, Prince Baelon, to Rhaenys and her potential child as his new successor. The succession of the unborn Laena referred to as “the boy in the womb,” was fiercely debated before her birth.
After a day and a night of labor, Laena Velaryon gave birth to a twisted, malformed son who died an hour later. She was already frail from giving birth and grieving the death of her kid when childbed fever started to set in.
Neither Maester Gerardys from Dragonstone nor Maester Driftmark were able to cure Laena Velaryon. Three days after falling unwell, Laena died.
According to reports, Laena Velaryon made one more effort to fly to Vhagar before she passed away but instead died after passing out on the tower stairs. In order to keep an eye on Laena’s body, Daemon and Rhaenyra took her back to her bed.
