Rooney was born in Birmingham, Alabama, to actors Mickey Rooney (1920–2014) and Betty Jane Rase (1927–2002), a former Miss Birmingham and vocalist.
His first film performance was in Hot Rods to Hell in 1967, following his brother Tim’s appearance as a “Mouseketeer” in the Mickey Mouse Club in 1955. Later, in 1975 and 1980, he had subsequent appearances in the movies Honeysuckle Rose and the television movie Beyond the Bermuda Triangle.
