On December 30, Markkanen surpassed his previous career high with 32 points and seven rebounds over the Indiana Pacers. On January 10, 2018, Markkanen beat the New York Knicks 122-119 in double overtime by playing a career-high 46 minutes, scoring a career-high 33 points, and draining a career-high eight 3-pointers. He became just the second player in history who is seven feet tall to make eight three-pointers in a single game (the first being Dirk Nowitzki).

On January 22, Markkanen racked up a career-high 17 boards against the New Orleans Pelicans. Four days later, Markkanen tied his career high with three shots against the Los Angeles Lakers.
