Born in the United States on May 29, 1972, Laverne Cox is an actor and advocate for LGBT rights. Cox was raised by a single mother and her grandmother in the AME Zion church after being born in Mobile, Alabama. Before transitioning, M Lamar, her identical twin brother, played Marcus in Orange Is the New Black as Sophia. Cox claims that at age 11, after coming to terms with her feelings for some of her male peers and having undergone years of bullying for not performing “the way someone assigned male at birth was expected to act,” she attempted suicide.

Cox had previously studied creative writing at the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham, Alabama, where she received her degree in dance.

Cox rose to prominence as Sophia Burset in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black, becoming the first transgender person to be nominated for an acting Primetime Emmy Award, also the first since 1990, when composer Angela Morley performed. When she was the executive producer of Laverne Cox Presents The T Word in 2015, she became the first transgender woman to receive a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Class Special. In two of the episodes of the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black, Lamar, Laverne Cox’s identical twin, played his sister’s pre-transition character.
Reginald Lamar Cox was a soprano in his church choir in his formative years. He originated from Mobile, Alabama. Prior to leaving Yale to concentrate on music, he studied sculpting at Yale and painting at the San Francisco Art Institute.
