Laverne Cox (born May 29, 1972) is an LGBT right activist and actress from the United States. Laverne Cox rose to notoriety as Sophia Burset on the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black, where Laverne Cox became the first transgender person to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in an acting category, and the first since composer Angela Morley in 1990. Laverne Cox became the first transgender woman to win a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Class Special as executive producer of Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word in 2015. As Cameron Wirth on CBS’s Doubt, she became the first transgender person to play a transgender series regular on American broadcast television in 2017.

Cox was born in Mobile, Alabama, and was brought up in the AME Zion church by a single mother and her grandmother. M Lamar, her identical twin brother, played Marcus in Orange Is the New Black as Sophia before she transitioned. According to Cox, she made an attempt at suicide when she was 11 years old after realizing she had feelings for some of her male classmates and having endured years of bullying for not acting “the way someone labeled male at birth was meant to act.”

Cox co-produced and co-hosted the VH1 makeover television series TRANSform Me and participated as a contestant in the first season of the reality series I Want to Work for Diddy on VH1. Cox received the Stephen F. Kolzak Award from GLAAD in April 2014 in recognition of her efforts on behalf of the transgender community. Cox made history in June 2014 when she became the first transgender person to grace the cover of Time. With her cover for the South African edition of Cosmopolitan in February 2018, Cox became the first transgender person to do so.
