Laverne Cox, an American actress and a popular LGBT rights activist, was born on May 29, 1972. She gained recognition for her portrayal of Sophia Burset in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black, making history as the first transgender person to be nominated for an acting Primetime Emmy Award and the first since composer Angela Morley in 1990.
She became the first transgender woman to win a Daytime Emmy Award in 2015 for Outstanding Special Class as executive producer of Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word.
