Reporter Lee Thomas has been a favorite of Detroit television viewers and all of his coworkers for more than ten years. One of Thomas’ supervisors, Dana Hahn, said of him: “Our viewers have just grown to adore him over time. He’s just a charismatic, outgoing person.”

Despite the warm camaraderie in the newsroom, Thomas maintained his privacy. He used to be so reclusive that on days off from work, he wouldn’t allow himself to be seen on the streets of Detroit. Under his television makeup, he was attempting to conceal the fact that his face was rapidly morphing.

Thomas stated, “I stayed in the house because I didn’t want people to see how I looked.” Years prior, he had small pale spots on his scalp and one hand before the mysterious white blotches spread to his face. And ever since receiving a diagnosis from a skilled dermatologist in 1994, he had been living in constant fear of how quickly and far they might spread. Thomas was informed that he had vitiligo, a condition that affects an estimated 4 million people in the United States. The condition leaves the skin without pigment, turning it white, and has no known cure.
