Letitia Ann “Tish” James, is an American lawyer, activist, and politician, she was born on October 18, 1958. She won the 2018 election to succeed appointed Attorney General Barbara Underwood and is currently the Democratic Party’s nominee for Attorney General of New York. She is the first woman and African-American to hold the job.

Letitia James, who was born and raised in Brooklyn, graduated from Lehman College in The Bronx before pursuing her J.D. at Howard University in Washington, D.C. She held positions as a public defender, a member of staff for the New York State Assembly, and then an assistant attorney general for the state of New York (Brooklyn Regional Office).

From 2004 to 2013, James was a member of the New York City Council. She represented the 35th district, which encompasses parts of Crown Heights, Prospect Heights, Bedford-Stuyvesant and Clinton Hill in Brooklyn. From 2013 to 2018, she served as the Public Advocate for NYC.
