A killer whale, also known as an orca, named “Lolita,” originally hailing from the Pacific Northwest, currently resides at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami, Florida. Born in 1964, she stands as one of the oldest captive orcas, having been in captivity since 1970.

Lolita’s story has sparked concern and disagreement among animal welfare advocates and those who advocate for the freedom of confined marine creatures. Ongoing discussions and initiatives have been undertaken with the goal of releasing Lolita from captivity and relocating her to a larger marine enclosure, where she could enjoy more space and interaction with fellow orcas, as opposed to a return to the wild.

Several organizations and advocates argue that the circumstances in which Lolita is currently held fail to meet the ethical and environmental standards necessary for the well-being of such a highly intelligent and social species.
