Brown first attended Centennial High School in Roswell, Georgia, his hometown. He averaged 20.8 points as a senior, winning Georgia 5A Player of the Year and fourth-team Parade All-American honours. When he graduated in 2009, Rivals.com had him listed as the No. 7 shooting guard overall and No. 36 nationally. After graduating, he enrolled in the Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia.
After receiving Spanish citizenship and giving up his American citizenship, Brown will play for Spain in EuroBasket 2022.
The Wolfpack were led to back-to-back NCAA tournament trips in 2012 and 2013 by Brown, a 6’5″ guard from Roswell, Georgia, who played for NC State from 2010 to 2013. Brown led the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in assists with 7.2 per game as a junior, averaging 12.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game, and was named to the second team All-ACC at the end of the year.
After the 2012–13 season, Brown made the choice to skip his final year of NCAA eligibility and instead join the 2013 NBA draft.
