Brazil saw tremendous economic growth and widespread social welfare program implementation during his prior presidential terms, lifting millions of people out of poverty.
However, due to the country’s statutes prohibiting a third straight term as president, Lula resigned from office.
After Lula left the Presidential post, Lula was convicted of corruption and money laundering the following year. Lula served some years in prison March 2021 where he was cleared of all charges after the Supreme Court overturned the convictions.
