Arulpragasam may have been born in London, but most of her youth was spent in the northern region of Sri Lanka.
In the 1980s, as the civil conflict between the Sinhalese government in the south and the Tamil minority in the north became more intense, her father joined the militant Tamil Tigers, and the rest of her family escaped Sri Lanka, ultimately moving back to London.
Arulpragasam went there to study visual arts, and while she was there she often produced artwork that was impacted by the war she had seen as a youngster.
As the graphic designer for the British pop punk band Elastica, Maya was introduced to the music business for the very first time. During this time, she also became acquainted with the recording equipment that is used by producers of dance music.
Arulpragasam released her first song, titled “Galang,” under the moniker M.I.A. in the year 2003. Despite the fact that just 500 copies of the song were manufactured, it became an immediate sensation in the club scene throughout Europe, and news soon spread on the Internet about its distinctive combination of politically conscious world music, bass-infused hip hop, and South London dancehall patois.
