Her music combines electric instruments and samples with elements of alternative, dance, electronic, hip hop, and world music. M.I.A., whose parents are Sri Lankan Tamils, was born in London and moved with her family to Jaffna in northern Sri Lanka at the age of six months.
When M.I.A. (rapper) was a young child, the Sri Lankan Civil War caused her family to flee their home and return to London as refugees. The war had a significant impact on M.I.A.’s artistic vision.
In 2000, M.I.A. (rapper) began her career as a visual artist, filmmaker, and designer. In 2002, M.I.A. (rapper) started her recording career.
