Reginald Lamar Cox was born on May 29, 1972. Reginald Lamar Cox is an American composer, singer, and artist who goes by the stage name M Lamar. M Lamar is a pianist and operatic countertenor whose work combines performance, installation, cinema, and sculpture.
Lamar, who is Laverne Cox’s identical twin, portrayed his sister’s pre-transition persona in two episodes of the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black.
M Lamar Cox was raised in Mobile, Alabama, and participated in the church choir as a young child, singing as a soprano. M Lamar studied art at Yale University’s graduate school for sculpture before quitting to concentrate on music. M Lamar travelled to New York primarily to study voice with La Gran Scena Opera Company’s lead soprano and company founder Ira Siff.
Lamar took part in an open discussion with authors bell hooks, Marci Blackman, and Samuel R. Delany in 2014 as part of hooks’ work as scholar-in-residence at The New School. The discussion was titled “Transgressive Sexual Practice.” M Lamar has credited the writing of hooks and Toni Morrison as well as the operatic work Plague Mass by Diamanda Galás as sources of inspiration.
