McDonald competed in the boys’ singles semifinals at the 2012 Australian Open. He won the 18s singles title at the 2012 Easter Bowl and had a career-high ranking of number 12 in the ITF World Tour Junior Rankings in 2012.

He qualified for the 2013 Cincinnati Masters at age 18 and won the men’s singles at the Ojai Tennis Tournament in 2013 while still a junior by defeating top 100 players Nicolas Mahut and Steve Johnson.

He was defeated by fellow qualifier David Goffin in the opening round of the main draw, though.
