The song “They Call the Wind Maria,” which was performed in the 1951 Broadway production of Paint Your Wagon, served as the inspiration for her given name.

Patricia Carey, an Irish-born former opera singer and voice coach, and Alfred Roy Carey, an African-American and black Venezuelan-American aeronautical engineer, have three children together.

She is the youngest. Francisco Nez, her Venezuelan great-grandfather, adopted the last name Carey after moving to New York. Her five-octave vocal range, melismatic singing style, songwriting, and particular use of the whistle register have all earned her recognition.

She is frequently referred to as the “Queen of Christmas” and the “Songbird Supreme.”

Carey’s 1990 self-titled debut album played a part in her ascent to popularity. Beginning with “Vision of Love” and ending with “Emotions,” she was the first artist to have all five of her debut singles reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

John Wesley Hickey

John Wesley Hickey, an Irish-American salesperson, passed away on October 17, 1936. (he was born on January 21, 1894). He is the maternal grandfather of Mariah Carey.
